When meaning matters most [Presentation]

'Leading Millennials through mentorship with social media' is the subject of my presentation I recently made for a local leadership conference for Bidvest Namibia (a leading Namibian services, trading and distribution company listed on the Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX) who employs more than 3,200 people).

From my experience and research I have found that Millennials seek fulfilment in meaning, are driven by purpose and are motivated by their passion. Leading through mentorship is a key way to attract, engage and retain Millenials within any organisations workforce and Social Media provides the idea environment for this to take place.

4 TED Talks every non-Millennial should see

TED is a not just an idea it is a movement. With over 2000 videos uploaded and attracting well over a billion views, TED is an invaluable source of information. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design and was the brainchild of Richard Saul Wurman, who observed a convergence of these fields in 1984. With the slogan “Ideas worth sharing” TED has become the 'go to' for information and inspiration from the world's leaders in the fields of not only technology, entertainment and design but also for business, science, culture, medicine and academics among others.

Millennials. For some they are a generation of 'lazy, entitled narcissists who still live with there parents' (TIME Magazine). For others they are a generation of collaborative team players who seek meaning and purpose. Understanding Millennials, managing and leading them and engaging them in the work place is most definitely not 'business as usual' and will require a lot more insight and effort than with previous generations. The following four TED Talks are a great point of reference to getting started with understanding this generation.

Crowdfunding platforms like kickstarter, Indiegogo and GoFundMe have become successful launch pads for new fashion brands to reach the market in a way that was simply not possible just 10 years ago. In years past, launching a fashion brand required hefty branding and marketing budgets, multiple industry connections and a considerable amount of time and effort, with success often hinged on luck.

Crowdfunding has removed a considerable amount of these obstacles which fashion brands faced in the past. With the advent of social media, rapidly evolving mobile technologies and constantly changing consumer behaviours, establishing a brand is that much easier when done via crowdfunding. However, beyond just successful establishing of fashion brands, crowdfunding has also helped raise the bar and is creating better fashion brands along with it.
